The coastal areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are bracing for super cyclone Phailin that is expected to make a landfall by Saturday evening with a wind speed of up to 240 km per hour. Here are some precautions that are advisable when a cyclone approaches:
- Remain indoors, unless an evacuation is ordered by local authorities
- Clear away loose material that could fly around and cause injury during extreme winds
- Close all windows and doors securely
- In case of flooding, keep a route planned to the nearest safe high ground
- Turn off power, gas and water connections, disconnect all appliances
- Keep an emergency kit handy including clothes, torch, batteries, essential food, water and first aid kit
- Ensure household members know the strongest part of the house where they can take shelter
- Check if your neighbours are also well prepared
