Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that Dalit organisations and trusts should give primary importance to educational institutions as empowerment of backward classes will be possible only through education.
He said that the proposed Medical College at Palakkad under the aegis of the Scheduled Caste Development Department will be a major step in this direction and will turn out as a model for the rest of the country. He was inaugurating the state conference of the Kerala Dalit Front at the Town Hall here on Saturday.
The Medical College will begin classes from the next academic year and about 45 per cent of the seats are reserved for Dalit students.
The Chief Minister said that the government has a favourable stand to allot more institutions for Dalit communities. The government will consider allotting institutions for the community if trusts which protect general interests turn up.
Oommen Chandy said that a major issue faced by the Dalits in the state is being landless and the government is taking sincere efforts to overcome this situation.
The Tribal Forest Protection Act was introduced with the aim of ensuring a better livelihood for Adivasi communities but the introduction of the legislation has not acted as a complete solution for the Adivasi communities.
“The combined efforts of political parties and civil society is necessary for the empowerment of the oppressed class,” he said.
Scheduled Caste Welfare Minister A P Anilkumar, former Minister N K Premachandran, C Divakaran MLA, N Peethambara Kurup MP, KDF state president P Ramabhadran, E Marydasan, V Dinakaran and Boban G Nath participated.
