Death toll in Mumbai hooch tragedy rises to 81; 4 excise officials suspended
4 excise department officials have been suspended in the Malwani tragedy which has already claimed 81 lives

Malvani: The death toll in the Hooch tragedy in Malvani area of Mumbai rose to 81 on Saturday. Twenty one others who had consumed the spurious alcohol are critical and are on ventilator support.

Probing to find more people complicit in this heinous activity, the Crime branch of the Mumbai Police has arrested 5 people out of whom one allegedly distributed the alcohol and the rest were suppliers. Four excise department officials have also been suspended in the case for negligence. A departmental inquiry is likely to be initiated soon.

All the accused have been remanded to police custody till July 26.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria on Friday evening suspended eight police officers at Malvani police station, including senior inspector Prakash Patil in connection with the incident.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a probe into the hooch tragedy and the police has been asked to submit a report as soon as possible. The case has been transferred to the Mumbai crime branch.

On Wednesday, the victims consumed liquor at a shop in Malvani and fell sick the next morning. It was evident by Thursday evening that they had consumed contaminated liquor.
