New Delhi: The man behind the wheel of the speeding Audi car that fatally knocked down a 25-year-old man on central Delhi’s Bahadurshah Zafar Marg on Saturday night was arrested on Monday.
Police managed to track down the accused, Rajiv, by piecing together the statements of eyewitnesses and combing through CCTV footage from cameras installed in the area.
Rajiv, who is a property dealer and lives in Greater Kailash, was going home when he hit Manoj, who worked at a juice shop, and ran from the spot. The impact of the hit was such that Manoj was flung several feet in the air and was impaled by iron grills as he landed straight on the road divider. It had taken police around an hour to extract him from the grills. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but he had already died by then.
Although police have managed to nab the accused, the relatives of the victim feel aggrieved as people who could have helped his brother stood by and made videos instead.
The chilling clip that police received was filled with the sound of the victim’s crying son, shouting “Papa, papa!” Police said Manoj was crossing the road with his son to offer some food to the homeless.
Ajay Kumar Yadav, an eyewitness and a distant relative of Manoj, said, “Whatever has happened is sad. But more disheartening is that none of the passersby stopped to help. They were here making videos and clicking photos but no one pulled him off the grill.”
According to the police, after the accident, the accused first went home and then went to a service centre in Noida to get his car repaired. Police are trying to verify why he did not stop to help the victim. A case of rash driving and death due to negligence has been registered against him.
While talking to CNN-News18, DCP Central Mandeep Singh Randhawa, requested people not to hesitate in helping accident victims. He assured that no one who helps an accident victim would be questioned without their will by the police or at the hospital.
