New Delhi: 'SlutWalk' Delhi also known as the 'Besharmi Morcha' is a movement that has been initiated to address the issue of unequal, unfair and stereotyped treatment of women in society is finally happening in Delhi on Sunday.
Students have come together to organise the movement in Delhi at Jantar Mantar. The first "Slut Walk" was held in Toronto this year after a police officer caused outrage by stating during a speech to university students that women should avoid "dressing like sluts" in order not to be victimised.
Delhi's version of SlutWalk, the 'Besharmi Morcha', has been subjected to a lot of questions but on the other hand has received a lot of support too. Many women who believe that this may be the first step of shifting blame for crimes against women from victims to the perpetrators. Many have shown interest and joined the protest can say, with a firm, belief that this may bring a change in mind sets about women's status in the Indian society.
The organisers have done their best to make the movement culture-specific in India so that it makes more sense to Indians. There was also a constant debate among Indian feminists over the lack of an original Indian concept and the need to ape the West.
Bhopal too witnessed its own version of the 'SlutWalk', which got a lukewarm response. Even with almost 5,000 confirmations on Facebook, very little participation was seen. The Bhopal march, however, was not a part of the Delhi edition.
It remains to be seen if the capital comes out and joins the so-called 'shameless protest' and address the issue of unequal, unfair and stereotyped treatment of women in society.
