New Delhi: The Delhi police released the annual crime data on Wednesday, highlighting a decline in heinous crimes and a jump in arrest rates in the national capital during 2018.
The data showed a sharp decline in riots, dacoity and robbery, but heinous crimes like rape saw only a marginal fall in numbers. Murder cases, on the contrary, registered a small uptick as compared to 2017.
According to the police data, Delhi reported a total 23 riot cases in 2018, a decline of 54% from cases reported in 2017 and 70.89 from 2016. Dacoity, with 23 reported cases in the past year, is down by 36.11%, compared to total cases in 2017 and 50% in 2016. Number of reported robbery cases — 2,307 — also marks 20.15% decline from 2017 and 49.68% from 2016.
However, murder in Delhi saw a 3.25% increase, with 477 cases reported in the past year compared to 462 in 2017. The 2,043 reported cases of rape were only 0.78% less than the total cases of the crime reported in 2017. Police data though shows that total number of reported heinous crimes in Delhi is down 11.72%.
Delhi police also reported a marked increase in number of arrests over the past three years, with 91,291 total arrests made in 2018 in cases of robbery, snatching, murder and attempt to murder, burglary, vehicle theft, rape, and cases under the ambit of Arms, Excise and Narcotics (NDPS) Acts. The number stood at 84,999 in 2017 and 69,071 in 2016.
Historically, Delhi has higher crime numbers among all metropolitan cities, earning the national crime capital moniker. According to National Crime Records Bureau data (NCRB), Delhi accounted for 38.8% of all crimes charged under the Indian Penal Code in all metropolitan cities for the year 2016. The national capital led murder, kidnapping and abduction, crimes against women and children, economic offenses and theft numbers among metropolitan cities in 2016.
Delhi’s conviction rate has also seen steady decline over the past decade. In fact, in February 2018, Delhi Lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal had asked police to analyse all criminal cases that ended in acquittal of the accused and come up with measures to boost conviction rate.
On Wednesday, Delhi police claimed it had started a “pilot project” in select 30 police stations, where it had deployed suitable manpower and trained and equipped staff with legal, forensic scientific and technological aids. The project aims to improve quality of investigation, conviction rate and dispose criminal cases in a timely fashion.
Delhi police also reported a 17.39% decline in heinous crimes against North East residents, down from 23 reported cases in 2017 to 19 in 2018.
