The Real Madrid soccer star of yesteryears will rtequire a surgery after he suffered a heart-attack on Saturday morning.

Madrid: Real Madrid great Alfredo Di Stefano, in hospital after suffering a heart-attack, was reported on Sunday to be in a "serious" condition and in need of by-pass surgery.

The medical update on the Argentine-born 79-year-old was delivered in a statement by the La Fe University hospital near Valencia where the football legend was transferred after complaining of chest pains.

Di Stefano "is suffering from an acute heart condition with a ventricular malfunction requiring a by-pass," the hospital statement which appeared on Real Madrid's official website reported.

It added that tests on the five-time European champion revealed "heart damage needing surgical treatment when conditions are appropiate."

The dual European Footballer of the Year (1957 and 1959) suffered the heart-attack in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He has been visited by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and vice-president Emilio Butragueno.

Di Stefano, an honorary club president, led the Spanish giants to five consecutive European Cups between 1956 and 1960 and eight Spanish league titles.

He was born on July 4, 1926 in Buenos Aires and began his career at River Plate (Argentina) and Bogota's Millionarios (Colombia) before making his mark at Real between 1953 and 1964.
