CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday announced a slew of measures for the welfare of the differently-abled persons in TN and allocated Rs 9.53 crore for the purpose.The announcements include waiver of interest for the loans availed by the differently-abled for starting businesses, setting up of training centres for visually-impaired persons in 20 more districts and supply of retrofitted scooters.Distribution of hearing aids, each worth Rs 10,000 to 1,000 students and renovation of three leprosy rehabilitation centres are also in the pipeline.At present, loans are being provided to the differently-abled persons through the Central Cooperative Banks for starting business establishments. The CM has directed that the interest accrued for the loans would be borne by the State. In a bid to help train visually-impaired children below six years, primary level training centres are being run in five districts. The CM has ordered that similar training centres should be started in 20 more districts Considering the representations from students, self-employed persons and employees, the CM has directed that retrofitted petrol scooters should be given to 400 differently-abled persons this year. As of now, residential vocational training centres are being operated in 12 districts with the help of NGOs. The CM said this would be extended to 20 more districts. Since the rehabilitation centres for leprosy-afflicted persons functioning in 10 places are in a dilapidated condition, the CM has said that they would be rebuilt.
