E-admission vulnerable to hacking

BHUBANESWAR: Just days after the launch of the ‘hack-proof’ Utkal University Examination Management System (UUEMS), a group of ethical hackers has hacked into the system exposing the vulnerability in the e-admission system.Amiya Mishra, a certified ethical hacker, entered the UUEMS system by using, what he claimed, was a Structured Query Language (SQL) injection. SQL injection is a technique often used to attack databases through a website.“The UUEMS contains a lot of information which should be privy to the students and the university management. This vulnerability should not be ignored by the university authorities,” explained Amiya. Hacking into the UUEMS live, he displayed how easy it can be for anyone to infiltrate the system. “If I can enter the website through unauthorised means, then anyone else can too,” added Amiya.The team of ethical hackers has extended their support to the university stating that they are ready to help the developers of UUEMS by explaining how the security lapse can be rectified. “Small changes in the coding will eliminate the lapse,” said Amiya. One can misuse the details of the students.The team had reportedly visited the university to warn them of the security threat in the UUEMS system.
