PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry Municipal Services Private Limited (PMSPL), the agency entrusted with the task of solid waste management, has submitted an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report to the Pondicherry Pollution Control Committee for setting up an Integrated Municipal Solid Waste facility at Kurumbapet. This was submitted a recently as per the terms of reference finalised by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). The MoEF has directed PMSPL to submit the details of environmental data and water quality around the landfill site. The details of impact on water bodies, rivers and ponds and mitigation measures during the rainy season were also needed to be looked into. This assumes significance as the Kurumbapet site is very close to Ousteri, the largest water body which has been recently declared as a wet land. Meanwhile, dumping of garbage has been shifted from Kurumbapet to the old site at Kavuvadikuppam. Though efforts are being made for effective clearing, there are many bottlenecks. On an average day, 300 tonnes of garbage is generated and 30 trips are needed to offload it. There is no proper road to the Karuvadikuppam site, affecting the speed of clearing operations.“We have approached the government to provide a transfer station in the town where the cleared garbage could be kept for a while before being transported to the dumping site “, said Subash Menon, Chairman, Kivar Holdings, which has 95 percent equity in the joint venture. A site has been identified at Mettupalayam behind the truck terminal. The government is also considering the request. “I have asked Oulgaret Municipal Commissioner to examine the request for the site as requested by PMSPL at Mettupalayam,” said Director of Local Administration, A Balasubramanian.Meanwhile, PMSPL is awaiting the environmental clearance of the site and once it is handed over, the segregation of garbage as well as processing would begin.PMSPL is a joint venture of Kivar Environ and Pondicherry Urban Development Agency.
