The government on Monday launched a facility for emergency care for accident victims on Gorgon-Jaipur stretch of NH-8.

The government on Monday launched a facility for emergency care for accident victims on Gorgon-Jaipur stretch of NH-8.

Minister for Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes on Monday launched six life support ambulances to be used exclusively for urgently transporting accident victims to the nearby hospitals.

Fernandes today launched a pilot project for cashless treatment of accident victims on Gorgon Jaipur stretch of NH-8, in presence of Ashok Gehlot, Chief Minister of Rajasthan, and Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Chief Minister of Haryana, Tushar A Chaudhary, Minister of State for Road Transport ~~amp; Highways and Sarvey Sathyanarayana, Minister of State for Road Transport ~~amp; Highways.

The minister also unveiled a crash investigation vehicle deployed by National Automotive Testing research and Development Infrastructure Project(NATRIP) for scientific investigation of serious accidents on this stretch by a team headed by Professor Anoop Chawla of IIT, Delhi.

"Cashless treatment of road accident victims would make a major impact on the road safety scenario of the country," Fernandes said here. He expressed deep concern over the high incidence of road accidents and resultant fatalities.

Fernandes appealed to the audience to voluntarily observe the rules of the road like adherence to speed limits, wearing helmet, use of seat belts, avoid drinking and driving, respect pedestrians right at zebra crossing, avoid jumping red lights, avoiding use of high beam and keeping cool to avoid road rage.

"Let us resolve to follow these simple rules of road safety strictly from today; let all of us become Road Safety Volunteers from this day," the Minister said.

He said that on the basis of the experience gained from this pilot project and the investigation by the team of IIT Delhi a more comprehensive scheme may be launched for the entire country in phases.

Addressing a concern by the Haryana Chief Minister that animal driven vehicles have not been taken into consideration, Fernandes assured that his ministry will study the proposal and take a decision.

The Road ministry has Created a corpus of Rs 20 crore for this project. Thanking his predecessor, the minister said that CP Joshi

former Road Minister conceptualised it.
