Ex-diplomat PK Menon is dead

With his wife by his side P K Menon struggled on the thin line separating coma and death for eight long years. But barely two months after her death, the veteran diplomat breathed his last, in the same private hospital which had been a home to the couple  for almost a decade.

It was eight years back in the United States that P K Menon, former scientific advisor to the UN General Secretary, suffered a brain haemorrhage. His wife Dr Shantha, then a gynaecologist and  an obstetrician, returned to India. Gradually life for the couple centred around his ICU.

After waiting all these years by his side, Dr Shantha died of pneumonia on August 17. “Though we can’t make an official statement, he seems to have sensed her death in his coma. He had severe fits after the death of Dr Shantha. On the 42nd day after her death he also breathed his last,” said Subash Kumar, Menon’s nephew.

Menon has been named in the Cambridge University’s ‘Who is Who of International Law’. He has authored 12 books on international law and has taught in universities across the world.

He was the first Indian to address the American Bar Council and the scientific advisor to the UN Secretary General and has authored about 250 articles that were published worldwide. He has  won recognitions from various international universities.
