PUDUCHERRY: A joint federation of farmers associations took out a rally from Ariyankuppam,on Tuesday, seeking disbursement of relief to farmers affected by cyclone Thane.The farmers with a 19-point agenda that includes waiver of loans and disbursement of relief with an enhanced amount came on a rally after the relief remained un-disbursed even after a month of the cyclone.The farmers sought Rs 10,000 per coconut tree, Rs 40,000 per acre for paddy, Rs 50,000 per acre for plantains, Rs 50,000 per acre for sugarcane, groundnuts and Rs 10,000 per tamarind tree. A compensation of Rs 10,000 for agricultural workers and Rs 1 lakh for cultivable land damaged by sea water intrusion were among their other demands.T Geethanathan , general secretary of Puducherry Vivasayi Sangam, N Ayyavu, president, M P Baskaran, secretary, R Baskar, treasurer, Pasumaipadai Iyakkam, V Elango, president of coconut growers association, S Elangovan, vice president, K Ramasamy, general secretary of the same association, R Ezhil raja, president of another coconut growers association and V Kaliamurthy, secretary of the same association participated in the rally. At the end of the rally farmers presented a memorandum to the chief minister containing their demands.
