CHENNAI: The New Indian Express has earned the distinction of being the fastest growing newspaper among the top 10 dailies in India, for the second consecutive time, recording an amazing 7.4 per cent increase in readership in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) released on March 5. By gaining over 40,000 new readers in the fourth quarter of 2011, TNIE has shown a growth percentage that is much higher than that of its rivals, the Times of India (2%), The Hindu (3.27%) and the Deccan Chronicle (- 5.48%) and has fared remarkably well in tier-3 cities, recording an additional readership of 4,000 in Coimbatore, 2,000 in Cuttack, 2,000 in Kozhikode and 1,000 in Thiruvananthapuram. In Andhra Pradesh, TNIE grew by 111.1 per cent adding 20,000 new readers in the last quarter when the readership of other newspapers went down in the State — Times of India (-7.7 %), The Hindu (-2 %) and Deccan Chronicle (-3.9 %) — after the third quarter of 2011.While TNIE grew by 1.7 per cent in Tamil Nadu, adding 3,000 readers, in Kerala it put up a phenomenal show by increasing its readership by another 33,000, a whopping 15.6 per cent growth as against The Hindu’s 9.5 per cent.
