After seeking treatment at many hospitals across India, Archana’s husband got in touch with Dr. Gokhale and his team in Hyderabad.“Archana had to wait for a month-and-a-half at a hotel since there was no donor. The moment we received a donor, we called an emergency meeting and decided to go ahead,” chief cardiothoracic, transplant and minimal access surgeon at Yashoda Hospital Dr AGK Gokhale said.Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, Dr Gokhale termed the availability of the organ sheer luck. “The decision to conduct the 14-hour-long surgery was taken after the family members of a brain-dead patient agreed to donate the organ,” he explained.“This type of transplant was done previously in Chennai three months ago, and in Bombay last month,” pulmonologist and consultant Dr. R Vijay Kumar added. For the tests alone, the patient’s family had to shell out `1-1.5 lakh and the cost of the operation ranges between `15-20 lakh. “It takes a lot of investment to research and set up for lung transplant. Not all medical institutes take it up. So this operation is definitely a step forward,” Dr. Gokhale said.first published:September 22, 2012, 08:34 ISTlast updated:September 22, 2012, 08:34 IST
