The police on Thursday arrested four persons of whom one is a students and two are ex-students of the Motilal Nehru Government Polytechnic College for alleged involvement in an extortion racket.
Those arrested are Ramu alias Ramkumar (21) of Karamanikuppam, a second year student and general secretary at the college, Satyaraj (24) from Muthialpet, Vinod (21) from Santhi Nagar and Velu (26) from Anitha Nagar. Satyaraj and Vinod are products of the polytechnic college.
Police said the quartet belongs to deceased rowdy Jegan’s gang. Velu and Vinod were allegedly involved in setting fire to a saw mill belonging to Narshia Petal and threatening him for extortion.
Ramu and Satyaraj were accused of hurling a bomb at Patel’s house and burning a bus at 100 Feet Road for another extortion from a tour operator.
Police added that Ramu joined the gang after meeting Velu in a gym. The former is the son of a small time employee of a private company and became involved for easy money. He then got Satyaraj and Vinod to join him. None of them has any previous criminal record. They were under the impression that they would never get caught, police added.
