BANGALORE: Normally people pay taxes entrusting that their surroundings will be taken care. However, Domlur service lane is causing a few problems for the residents there. The area around Sangamithra Financial Services has been converted into a garbage dumping ground. Mohammad Sheriff, the security guard for the company said that household and other waste are dumped here. “This has been happening for the last three years. Official complaints have been made to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities. But nothing has happened, the situation is still the same,” he said.Prashant and Shankar from BBMP said that the waste from all the houses in the area is dumped here. However, the BBMP van does come and collect it. The residents here are not satisfied with the work done.Prabavathi, who runs a paying guest facility for women said that even after the clearing is done, there are lorries that come to the area at night to unload and dump the garbage. She said, “It’s hard to sleep at night because of all the noise and commotion that goes on outside.” To add to it, the area has become the breeding ground for mosquitoes and pests. She further adds, “The hygiene levels are very poor.”The garbage that is dumped so recklessly is not the only problem. Stray dogs at night savage the place for food. As a result the filth further gets scattered. Another resident, Lakshmi Narayan, who has been living here for the past 43 years said that 40 years ago the last area was always clean and tidy. “It was probably one of the cleanest places in the city. There was hardly any litter around. But in the last few years the situation has deteriorated to a great extent. I wrote a letter in 2008 to the BBMP ward office stating that a clean tarred road has been turned to a dumping yard. But sadly, there was no response from them,” he said.He then wrote letters to the BBMP commissioner in 2009 - 10. “The response I got then was neutral. The matter was then finally taken up by the corporator,” he added. Concerned about the health and well being of his fellow residents, he mentioned that the below standard levels of hygiene here can put the health of the residents at risk. “Apart from the mosquitoes there are a lot of rodents that feed off the filth here. This can give rise to leptospirosis, commonly known as rat fever,” he further added. Another cause for worry is the burning of garbage. Most of the household wastes that are dumped here are plastic products. The fumes that rise from burning plastic are toxic in nature. The present corporator, Geetha Srinivasareddy has assured the residents that the segregation of garbage will be taken up and all the issues will be resolved before the monsoon arrives. BBMP’s efforts of waste managements have lead to segregation at the source campaign. According to the campaign, the BBMP is urging the residents to segregate dry waste from wet waste at the source itself.
