Government can appoint the next Army chief: Election Commission
While the UPA has time till Thursday to sign on the dotted line, sources say it is unlikely to do so.

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Monday allowed the UPA government to go ahead with its deliberations on the appointment of the next Army chief. When asked, Defence Ministry sources said administrative procedures to name the next Army chief were on. The final decision on the appointment, however, rests with the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister.

The EC had earlier stated that the model code of conduct doesn't extend to matters relating to the armed forces.

While the UPA has time till Thursday this week to sign on the dotted line, sources say it is unlikely to do so. It had earlier proposed the name of Vice Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag for the top post. But the BJP had opposed Lieutenant General Suhag's appointment saying only the new government should choose the next chief.
