New Delhi: It is finally here. 'Haider', an adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' is the third in the series by noted filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj. Boasting of a brilliant star cast that includes Shahid Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon, Tabu and Shraddha Kapoor, the film is set against the backdrop of modern-day Kashmir. From Shahid Kapoor's spine-chilling acting as the titular Haider, to Tabu's quiet desperation as his step-mother, here are 10 reasons why we are looking forward to 'Haider':
The Winter is Coming: There's Yash Chopra's Kashmir that we have grown up seeing on the big screen, and there's Vishal Bhardwaj's. While the former was all about breath-taking scenery and romance, the latter is about a blood-curdling darkness and desperation. The conflict-ridden state is an apt replacement for Denmark.
To be, or not to be: We don't know about you, but we were completely mesmerised by Shahid Kapoor's performance as the brilliant and brooding young Prince of Denmark. The portrayal of a haunted young man, blinded by thoughts of revenge, comes as a pleasant surprise from Kapoor, who is usually seen in happy, chirpy, romantic roles.
More matter, with more art: Critically-acclaimed actress Tabu plays the part of Gertrude, Hamlet's mother. When Haider's father disappears, leaving Haider's mother as a "half widow", she marries her brother in-law, portrayed by Kay Kay Menon. In the play, Gertrude's decision to marry her husband's brother triggers off the drama.
Sweets to the sweet: It seems like Shraddha Kapoor is set to play another sweet, innocent girl in 'Haider'. She portrays the role of Ophelia, Hamlet's love interest in the Shakespearian drama. Looking at the several steamy scenes and lip-locks we are happy to see that the young couple in 'Haider' get more action than the one in 'Hamlet'.
Never doubt we music: That Vishal Bhardwaj is a gifted musician as well as a filmmaker, we doubt not. Staying true to the pattern followed by his former films, 'Haider' also boasts of some moving tunes. What little we heard in the trailer, coupled with the whimsical choreography, was breath-taking.
