Tambaram police arrested a person in connection with unaccounted-for cash, here on Wednesday night.

Police said Mohammed Ansari, (42), a resident of Mannadi, was acting in a suspicious manner. They had already received a specific information of a hawala courier crossing Tambaram.

Interrogations revealed that he had stashed Rs 7.8 lakh in his socks which he wore upto his knees to hide the money from the onlookers.

He told the police that he would receive directions as to whom he should deliver the money to soon after he reached Ramanathapuram. The money was seized and he was subsequently arrested. It maybe recalled 3 persons with `9 lakh unaccounted cash were held on July 19 while Rs 17.33 lakh unaccounted cash was seized from another trio in the city on August 9.

Conman held

Police arrested a person for duping investors to the tune of Rs 1 crore, here on Wednesday night.

Sources said Jaffer Sadiq Basha ran Sunshine Business Groups at Velan Nagar, in Valasaravakkam promising huge returns through the paper cup manufacturing machines imported from China.

Lured by his promises, around 70 persons had deposited money ranging between Rs 1 and 2 lakh.

However, he had failed to provide the machines. Following complaints, an inquiry revealed that the accused had operated using different names in the neighbouring States with the same modus operandi. He was subsequently arrested and remanded to Judicial Custody.

Boy dies in accident

An eighteen-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday night after being mowed down by a van while he was on his way back home with his mother.

Police said Saravanan (18), a class XII student in a government school, used to help his mother Pachaiammal, a hawker selling fancy goods in a hand driven cart, on 100 ft Road in Vadapalani.

On Wednesday night, the accident took place while she was coasting her mobile shop and Saravanan his bicycle beside his mother. Both were hit by the van. Saravanan sustained injuries on his chest while Pachaiammal was injured in the leg. Saravanan later succumbed to the injuries at a private hospital in Sali Gramam. Van driver John was arrested and remanded.
