Shimla: Thieves struck at the historic Raghunathji temple in the heart of Kullu town and decamped with 40 kg silver and 165 grams gold jewellery. The estimated value of the stolen jewellery was about Rs 23 lakh.
The priest of the temple discovered the theft on Wednesday morning, when he opened shutters and found that idols of Lord Raghunathji and Sita and Hanuman Ji were not at their proper place and their jewelleries were missing, police said.
The idols of Lord Raghunathji and Sita were brought from Ayodhya in 1657 during the regime of Raja Jagat Singh (1637-1672). Kardar of the temple Danvender Singh informed the police about the incident and a police team, headed by Superintendent of Police Kullu, Vinod Dhawan, reached on the spot and started investigation.
The temple premises have been sealed and forensic experts were also called. The SP told reporters that every aspect is being looked into. "We will solve it soon," he said.
