IIT senates to give views by May 10

COIMBATORE: Faculty members at the IITs have sought time to study the proposed changes in the admission process to the premier technical institutions before implementing the system. In fact, the All India IIT Faculty Federation has insisted that implementing any change in the current JEE should be kept on hold until the recommendation is accepted by the Senates of each IIT. Incidentally, this is the first time the Union HRD Ministry has held consultations with faculty representatives before introducing a new admission policy to the IITs. The HRD Minister has asked Senates of all IITs to come up with their views on the proposed changes by May 10. Thereafter, by May 16 or 17, the IIT Council, the supreme government body, would prepare a draft consolidating the views of the different Senates. By the end of May, the IIT Council will meet with two faculty representatives from each Senate to finalise the proposal.IIT Guwahati Director Gautam Baruah has, however questioned the need for the Senates to give their approval. “There have been many changes in JEE over the years. All changes have been done by the Joint Admission Board, in which of course IIT faculty are there as ‘invited members’…There has been no protests like this,” he said.
