The state of West Bengal is known for its unique sweets that often are loved by people from all over the country, and one such famous sweet is named Mecha Sandesh. This sweet is mostly famous in the Beliatore area of the Bankura district. It is said that this sweet is more popular than Krishnanagar’s Lal Doi, Purulia’s Bhabra Bhaja and Shaktigarh’s Langcha.
According to the locals, Mecha Sandesh from Beliatore has never really managed to establish its name in the state but is a very unique sweet. There are only 40 shops in Bankura City and 10 in Rajgram village, Birbhum where you will find this sweet. Is making this sweet really difficult or there is a lack of demand for this sweet? LA local shopkeeper explained this in an interview with Local 18.
Giridhari Barat a sweet maker said, “At one time, my father used to make the Mecha Sandesh in the Bankura city, but only for special orders. I believe that the Mechs sandesh mainly originated from Beliatore and later it was started in Bankura city. The process of making this special sweet is quite tough and challenging which is why sweet makers in Bankura do not make it regularly. The demand is also very low which might also be the reason.”
There are hundreds of sweet shops in Bankura city where you will find a variety of sweets. However, Mecha Sandesh is hard to find as there is low demand. You can widely find this sweet in the Beliatore area only.
The lack of availability of this delicious sweet in Bankura City often leaves sweet lovers disappointed. A customer named Soumen Konnar, “It is disappointing that Mecha Sandesh is not always available in Bankura City. We have to travel to Beliatore to taste the unique sweet. It would be great if this sweet is more often available in the city.”
