In St Antony’s Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, a Silambam program was held on the behalf of the Global International Charter Trust. Silambam is a martial art style that is practised with specialised weapons, typically bamboo sticks. According to Local 18 Tamil, the objective of this program was to spread awareness regarding women safety and drug prevention. More than 300 people including boys and girls from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry participated in this Silambam spinning program. All the participants sat and stood up 90 times simultaneously, while swinging a Silambam over their heads. With this extraordinary feat, the students have achieved a place in the Nobel Book of World Records.
The Silambam players were felicitated by the school principal and Nobel World Records. The students were presented with certificates. Program coordinator Mohammad Safir said that 300 from Tamil Nadu and Puduvai have participated in this event which made its way to the world records. As per the program coordinator, it is an uphill task to sit and stand simultaneously 90 times, while swinging the Silambam in 3 minutes. Safir expressed happiness that all the students have participated enthusiastically and unitedly creating awareness about drugs and women’s safety.
Besides the Silambam spinning program, a circumambulation or act of walking in a circle around an object of veneration (respect) was also held. Safir also appreciated the parents of the participants for extending their support to the program by all possible means.
Silambam is the oldest form of martial art from Tamil Nadu and unknown to most people except for practitioners. In Tamil Nadu, to increase awareness about the sport, government jobs are easily available to Silambam practitioners under the sports quota. This art form is considered a great sport for better cardiovascular health and increased muscle power as well. Even a 60-year-old with a fair amount of fitness can start learning the sport.
At present, there’s a significant rise in Silambam sports training classes across various districts in Tamil Nadu. Concurrently, there’s also a growing interest among the public in supporting and promoting endangered traditional sports.
