Inflow into Hirakud increases

As inflow of water into the Hirakud Dam Reservoir (HDR) went up to 4,38,773 cusec, 19 sluice gates were kept open on Sunday to release rainwater received from upper catchment areas in Chhattisgarh. The water level on Sunday evening stood at 610.17 feet and the outflow at 3,09,222 cusec.

Sources said apart from the sluice gates, 2,700 cusec of water is being released into Bargarh Main Canal, 50 cusec discharged through Sason Canal, 20 cusec through Sambalpur distributary and 7 cusec into Hirakud Canal. The rainfall recorded upstream was 21.05 mm while in the downstream it was 13.81 mm, in the last 24 hours.

Executive Engineer Rabindra Panda said the gates would remain intact for the next two days and then they would resort to temporary storage of water in the reservoir before taking a decision for further release. With low rainfall recorded upstream, the situation is under control, he added.
