United Nations: As tensions continue to simmer between Iran and the Western world, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has asked the parties to resolve their differences through peaceful means, but stressed that it is Tehran's responsibility to prove their nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes only.
Iran is the world's fourth largest oil producer and has threatened to block oil deliveries that pass through the Strait of Hormuz if sanctions are imposed by global powers on the country's oil industry over its nuclear activities.
Ban said all UN member states, including Iran should fully comply with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council.
Responding to a question on Iran's threat to block the Strait of Hormuz, where about one-fifth of the world's oil passes to reach key markets, Ban said he hopes "the parties concerned will do their best to, first of all, defuse the tensions in the region and try to resolve all issues, differences of opinions, through dialogue and peaceful means."
Noting that he was concerned by the most recent International Atomic Energy Agency report which indicated that the Iranian nuclear programme is pointing to the possibility of a military dimension, Ban said "It is the responsibility of Iranian authorities to prove that their nuclear programme is for genuinely peaceful purposes."
With the international community not buying into the purpose of Iran's nuclear programme, the government in Tehran has to prove the nature of their nuclear programme, the Secretary General said adding that the Iranian Government should fully cooperate with the IAEA.
