New Delhi: With the arrest of three suspects linked to the ISIS from Telangana on Saturday, the terrorist group's threat continues to loom large over India. Indian intelligence agencies suspect that there are 23 Indians in Iraq and Syria fighting for the terror group.
Out of the 23 Indians in ISIS, 17 are from southern states. While six - Abdul Qudus Turki (Bijapur), Md. Umar Subahan (Bangalore), Maulana Abdul Kadir Sultan Armar (Bhatkal), Faiz Masood (Bangalore), Md. Riyaz (Bhatkal), Shameel Yakub (Kodagu) - are from Karnataka, four belong to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. They are Zeba Farheen (Hyderabad), Talmeezur Rahaman (Guntur), Atif Ahmed khan (Hyderabad), Athif Vaseem Mohammad (Adilabad). Four are from Kerala - Md. Rishal (Kannur), Md. Irfan Iqbal (Kannur), Huda Raheem (Kozhikode), Riyazur Rehman (Kozhikode), three from Tamil Nadu - Md. Thayyib Shaik (Vellore), Md. Syed Abu Tahir (Karur), Shakul Hameed (Chennai), four from Maharashtra, one from Jammu and Kashmir and one from Uttar Pradesh.
Six out of these 23 Indians who had joined the dreaded terror network have died and two have returned.
In an advisory sent after the November 13, 2015 terror attacks in Paris, the Home Ministry had said that multiple strikes clearly indicate the intention of ISIS to expand the area of terror action beyond Iraq and Syria.
The Home Ministry said that though the ISIS has not been able to establish any significant presence in India, its success in radicalising some youth, attracting certain sections of local population or Indian diaspora to physically participate in its activities or the possibility of piggy backing on terrorist groups operating in India have opened up the possibility of ISIS-sponsored terrorist action on Indian territory.
