CUDDALORE: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has always been considerate towards judiciary and she used to fulfill all the demands of the department instantly, said, Law Minister C Ve Shanmugam. Speaking at the inaugural function of the combined court buildings, Shanmugam said that the chief minister in fact aspired to become a  lawyer and has a lot of respect for the legal profession. The combined court buildings were inaugurated by the Madras High Court Judge Elipe Dharma Rao on Monday evening. Presiding over the function, the minister said, “The Cuddalore court building is historically important as it is 146 years old. The new combined court buildings have been inaugurated nearby, but it is our duty to preserve the old as well.” Shanmugam said the state government was keen on constructing spacious buildings for courts to ensure comfortable functioning which would facilitate speedy disposal of cases.“An additional `1.68 crore would soon be allocated to the Cuddalore court buildings,” said Shanmugam.In his inaugural address, Justice Elipe Dharma Rao said that many legal aid camps were conducted across the district post-Thane. “As many as 689 petitions were received in such camps and steps were taken,” he said.He hoped that the lawyers, litigants and judges should work in a way to fulfill the purpose of these court buildings. “Last year, out of a total 4,276 cases in lok adalats, 3,518 were settled in this district. 156 regular lok adalats and 5 mega lok adalats were conducted here in 2011,” he added.Justice M Jaichandren said, “Because of boycotts by the lawyers, court proceedings have been obstructed. In Cuddalore district , Panruti court lawyers top the list in boycotts in 2011.
