J&K Govt appeals to lawyers to end strike
Over 200 lawyers demanded roll back of the government's decision to transfer land registration work.

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government appealed to lawyers to call off their strike that entered 18th day on Wednesday, asking them not to make the issue of change of land registration process a point of confrontation.

"Lawyers should not make it a point of confrontation. We should jointly work for betterment of the people of the state. They should end strike," Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather said.

He said the government had ordered transferring of land registration work from the judiciary to the revenue department as "registration is basically a duty of the executives".

"We have full respect for the judiciary and lawyers. We honestly took this decision for the betterment of the system of land registration as the government is losing stamp duty," he said.

Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla said "we urge lawyers to leave the path of confrontation and restart normal work."

Meanwhile, over 200 lawyers assembled at the court complex in Jammu and shouted anti-government slogans demanding roll back of the government's decision to transfer land registration work.

Jammu Bar Association president BS Salathia said lawyers had intensified their stir in view of the failure of the state government to scrap its order.
