BHADRAK: He donated one of his kidneys and saved the life of a defence PSU employee. But the recipient forgot the promises he had made before the transplantation. And now donor Nihar Ranjan Parida (45) of Narasinghpur village in Bhadrak district is leading a life of misery. The story of Parida may match the plot of a Bollywood potboiler, but there is no parallel to the trauma he has been facing since then. The incident dates back to 1991 when he had donated his kidney to one S P Srinivasan, manager (personnel) of Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a PSU under the Ministry of Defence.     According to Parida, Srinivasan had promised him a job and Rs 30,000. But following the transplantation, he was offered only Rs 10,000 and denied the job.Recalling the days of his struggle, Parida said while he was looking for a job in Hyderabad after his Intermediate, he came across an advertisement in an English daily about kidney donation. “In the advertisement it was mentioned that the benefactor will be given a job and huge financial benefits. I reached Srinivasan’s home and had a discussion. They then promised me a job and Rs 30,000. Accordingly I agreed for the donation. On August 14, 1991, I donated my left kidney,” he said.He alleged that Srinivasan’s family later cheated him. They advised me to go home and rest for some days. They gave Rs 10,000 and had promised me a job in a private firm. “But when I met them later, they refused to acknowledge me and drove me away from their house,” he said.Betrayed, Parida then met the local administration and the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Though all assured him to look into the matter, none really cared thereafter. He too met the then Orissa Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, who had written to BDL authorities and the Defence Ministry on January 19, 1993 for help, but no assistance was received. Even his appeal to the Prime Minister’s grievance cell on April 18, 2000 went in vain. Now Parida is shouldering the burden of a 10-member family - his old parents, three children and the family of his younger brother who died due to brain malaria six months back. “I am not well, still I have to work as a daily labourer to sustain the family. I am yet to get a house under Mo Kudia Yojana and a loan to start a business as promised by the local administration,” he lamented.Collector Akshay Kumar Pani promised to look into the matter and extend assistance as per government rules and regulations.
