Mangalore: The efforts on establishing the identity of the dead naxal yielded no results on Thursday. Even after dispatching photographs of the dead naxal across police stations in Venoor, Beltangady and in neighbouring Kerala, Tamil Nadu states, the police failed to secure clues that would establish identity of the dead naxal. Sources told Express that the dead naxal was a member of one of the active naxalite teams, Nethravathy team, led by Vikram Gowda of Baradwaj in Kuthloor.

Sources who oversaw the post-mortem formalities at district Wenlock hospital’s mortuary on Thursday suspected that the dead naxal to be a native of Tamil Nadu. As the naxalite team had lobbed bombs at the ANF team during a fierce exchange of fire in Palligadde area, sources suspect that the dead naxal would have provided the expertise in assembling and detonating bombs.

Initially rumours were rife on the dead naxal being identified as the notorious naxal leader Ramesh alias Kuppuswamy who took charge after Cherukuri Rajkumar in charge of Sharavati naxalite team was killed in an encounter in AP. The possibility was ruled out, as officials involved in anti-naxalite operations pointed out that Maoist leaders including B G Krishnamurthy and wife Hosagaddhe Prabha (Thunga team), Nedigulli Padmanabha (Bhadra team) were resting in safe havens outside the forests.
