New Delhi: The Karnataka government has re-enforced the ban on sale and distribution of colas in educational institutions with immediate effect.
The move came six days after the High Court upheld the state government's ban of August 14 on the sale of soft drinks in educational institutions.
The move to ban colas began when a Delhi-based NGO, Centre for Science and Environment exposed that aerated drinks contained pesticides in quantities higher than the permissible limit.
The Karnataka government and judiciary have now decided that the fizz is just not good enough notwithstanding the thumbs up from the Centre.
"The state of Karnataka, after consideration of material and in the interest of health and well-being of children and students, has felt an imminent need to prevent the sale of carbonated beverages within school and college and hostel premises," said a notification issued on December 18.
The government has cited many reasons for the re-enforcement of the ban, including facts like consumption of carbonated beverages leads to obesity in children and that even the US and Britain have prohibited sale of soft drinks in schools in several states.
The state decided to reimpose the ban by exercising powers under Article 162 of the Constitution (read with Entry 6 of list-II of Schedule VII of the Constitution) and the inherent and general powers vested in it, the notification said.
