BHUBANESWAR: Eminent gastroenterologist and Head of Gastroenterology at AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr Subrat Kumar Acharya has called upon medical students to adopt a curiosity driven approach towards medicine and continuously learn from experience to excel in the profession.Local solutions are needed for local problems, he said pointing out that western medical recommendations do not work in many areas in the local context. Facilities must be provided to the students to participate in research activities fostering the inquisitive thought processes to improve patient care and devise indigenous, cost-effective, result-oriented products. The focus of the learning institutes should be to encourage learning and not teaching and encourage inquisitiveness in the students. The aim should always be to promote the highest scientific and ethical standards, Dr. Acharya said delivering a lecture on “Physician Scientists: Concept for Excellence” at the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital here. Doctors should treat each patient differently, analyse the problem and learn from that experience. They should adopt a curiosity-driven approach to deal with problems, continuously ask questions and find solutions, he added. Dean of IMS and Sum Hospital DK Ray and Managing Member of the ‘Siksha O Anusandhan’ Deemed University Gopabandhu Kar were present.
