CHENNAI: The CPM held hectic consultations with its ideological sibling the CPI before taking a final call on going ahead alone in the civic elections. The Marxist party released its first list of candidates just after the crucial meeting with the CPI. Veteran CPI leader R Nallakanu, State secretary D Pandian, senior functionaries C Mahendran and G Palanisamy arrived at the Marxist party headquarters on Saturday evening after talks with the AIADMK besides a party meet.CPM leaders, including State Secretary G Ramakrishnan and MLA K Balakrishnan were closeted with the leaders of the CPI for well over an hour. The CPI leadership apprised the Marxist functionaries of the civic bodies that it was still negotiating with the AIADMK. The seats where there could be local level adjustments between the CPI and the CPM were also discussed. Based on the feedback, the CPM made certain last minute changes in its list of candidates.“It is now clear that there will be no change of heart in the AIADMK camp. So, we decided in the meeting to go ahead after making sure that the interests of both the CPI and CPI(M) are protected,” a CPI (M) leader said.Emerging from the meeting, D Pandian was cagey on the talks with the AIADMK. Asked to comment on the word doing the rounds that CPI’s demand for certain town panchayats in Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts were holding up the parleys with the AIADMK, he said: “That is something that has to be discussed with the AIADMK and not the media.” On VCK leader Thirumavalavan’s invitation to Left parties to face the hustings together, he said he was “unaware” of any such move.
