Providing much relief to the homemakers, the LPG bottling plant at Udaymaperoor resumed its operation on Monday. According to IOC sources , around 100 truckloads of cooking gas, carrying 306 domestic cylinders, were delivered from the plant.
Earlier, the plant had been ciruclating over 150 truckloads of cooking gas on a daily basis, but owing to the shortage of technical staff in the morning shift the number had come down to 100.
“The plant has three bottling machines. As many as 30 technical staff are needed for their smooth functioning. In the morning shift, there was a shortage of 10 technical staff resulting in the operation of only two bottling machines. But, by afternoon the third also began functioning. The gas cylinder supply from the plant has been resumed partially,” sources said.
The technical staff kept themselves away from the work in the morning shift to protest the disciplinary action taken against some of them following the gas leak incident.
IOC sources said though the authorities promised to overcome the Indane cylinder crisis by working overtime in the coming days, they could not keep their word.
“The plant became operational after 20 days following the gas leakage. But even after 20 days, not all staff reported for duty. The higher officials are least bothered about the shortage. It will take more time to restore the LPG supply to normal state,” sources alleged.
Smooth functioning
Meanwhile, the IOC officials said the plant functioned smoothly in the afternoon shift. “We have resolved the staff shortage in the afternoon shift by making others work overtime. All the three bottling machines were fully operational during the afternoon shift from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.,” IOC officials said.
Meanwhile, the members of Indian Oil Employees Union (IOEU), the association of the technical staff of IOC, said the allegation that the technical staff were not ready to work overtime was baseless.
Sukulal, state secretary, IOEU said they were ready to work overtime to solve the crisis. “We are aware about the problems being faced by the people. The allegation against the staff is a deliberate move to tarnish the reputation of the IOC,” he said.
