With no signs of his demands being met, Made Gowda had threatened to stage fast-unto-death at the dam site at Mandya. He put off the fast to Thursday as authorities assured him that Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar will speak to him on the issue on Wednesday evening.
Protesters blocked prominent roads, burnt tyres and even cooked food on the roads paralysing traffic.
Hundreds protesters led by MPs A H Vishwanath, R Druvanarayan and Congress legislators staged a protest against the release of water to Tamil Nadu. Irrigation officials took the MPs and MLAs in a jeep to the dam site.
The leaders then said that there was 3.6 tmc ft of water in the dam and it was short of 5.4 tmc ft which is required for paddy grown on 98,500 acres.
The MPs held talks with Irrigation Minister Basavaraj Bommai and demanded stoppage of water to meet the state’s demand and for drinking water in Mysore, Bangalore and other towns. The authorities who reduced outflow for some time, increased it to 5,000 cusecs of which 2,200 cusecs were released to irrigation canals.
