The Bar and Bench of the Madras High Court have made significant contributions towards the development of the Indian legal system and produced great stalwarts, Supreme Court judge F M Ibrahim Kalifulla said in Chennai on Saturday.
Kalifulla was addressing a gathering to mark the completion of 150 years of the Madras High Court. The event was organised by the Select ‘75, a group comprising members from the 1975 batch of the Madras Law College. The group has been working towards empowering citizens on the Legal System of India by organising seminars and workshops.
“In the beginning, this high court was functioning in a historic building situated on the 1st Line Beach. It was on July 12, 1892 that the construction of the present exalted magnificent structure of the high court was completed,” Justice Kalifulla recalled.
Another Supreme Court judge P Sathasivam described the Madras High Court as a legend. “Being a legend, the high court continues to hold its charm and rigor in the present and aims to walk taller into the brighter future,” he added.
Justice Sathasivam lauded the HC staff for good, effective administration. “I sincerely appreciate the massive work done especially by the administrators. It would not be an overstatement to call them heroes of the back stage, because without their help, there would be friction in the justice delivery system,” he said.
Justice Sathasivam pointed out that the Madras High Court is the second-largest court complex in the world, after the Courts of London.
The event also saw a session on the Right to Information Act, its uses and abuses by former Additional Solicitor General L Nageswara Rao. Madras High Court judge S Nagamuthu enthralled the audience with a presentation on the nuances in criminal law and called for the empowerment of the police officers in order to deliver timely justice.
Eminent judges, included Chief Justice of Madras High Court M Y Eqbal, Justice P Jyothimani, Justice Chitra Venkatraman, former Advocate General K Parasaran and Senior Advocate K K Venugopal participated.
