"It was in 2012 that the first prototype was ready, but it took eight months to prepare a dosa from it," said Eshwar K Vikas.

New Delhi: Dosa lovers need not worry any more now about preparing one of the most difficult yet mouth-watering dishes. Dosa making, which is an art and requires skilled hands, can now be prepared with the press of a button. A dosa that costs Rs 30-40 in Bangalore set you back by about Rs 150 in New Delhi due to the lack of standardisation and absence of manpower.

Two SRM University boys from Chennai - Eshwar K Vikas and Sandeep Sabat - felt that the time has come for a change and made a machine that would make a dosa in a minute without hurting your pocket. In the third year of their engineering, while they were also working at the Amar Group of Companies, the duo thought of making this machine. "Being from electrical background, we faced challenges from the first day itself as the product required mechanical knowledge too," said Vikas.

However, their training at the Amar Group helped them in acquiring knowledge. Another challenge for them was monetary issue but the Amar Group let them use its products to make the machine. "It was in 2012 that the first prototype was ready, but it took eight months to prepare a dosa from it," said Vikas.

The two then participated in a startup contest in Chennai in June 2012 and won the best business plan award. It was then that the Indian Angel Networks (IAN) decided to incubate them and started their company Mukunda Foods.

They were asked to reduce the size of the machine so as to serve the purpose of the hotels, restaurant. Hari Balasubramanian, CEO, Ontrack Systems and member of Indian Angel Network, decided to mentor them. The duo then manufactured 'Table Top Dosa Making Machine' which they claim is the world's first such machine.

DosaMatic, as the machine is called, is priced at Rs 1 lakh. Vikas added, "No product is made in India. It is a challenging task to design, develop and manufacture a product. But the feeling of seeing the tag 'Made in India' was happiest," he added.

The team is now working on a smaller home version that, he says, will be launched in the next two years. "One can decide the size, type, thicknes and can even make fat free dosa," said Vikas.

In February this year, the company has not only made a mark in India, but world over with the product being shipped in Australia and Asia. Starting the venture with just two people, the team now has 14 people including service level people. After establishing themselves in Bangalore, Mukunda Foods is now opening its service centre in Noida next month.
