Email bomb threats received by three educational institutions here ahead of Independent Day have been traced to a 39-year-old, who was arrested by Chennai Police in connection with a similar hoax threat to the Secretariat in 2010.
Police suspect that the accused, S Senthil, who stayed in the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) staff quarters, was mentally unstable. He apparently told police that he sent the mails to take revenge on a woman who repeatedly turned down his proposals.
“The accused created a mail ID resembling the name of the woman. It also mentioned her office address,” said Saibaba Colony inspector R Srinivasalu.
The mails he sent to the educational institutions said that time bombs placed on the campuses would go off any time between August 10 and 15.
While PSG College of Arts and Science and the Government College of Technology received the mails on Monday, Avinashilingam University received a similar threat on Wednesday.
Investigations revealed that the mails were sent from the same mail ID, from which the hoax mails were sent to the Secretariat in 2010. Senthil was unmarried and he was released from prison only a few months back.
A police officer involved in the investigations said, “When we picked him up, he readily confessed to having sent the mails. He studied only up to Class X, but is well-versed with the Internet. He regularly posts advertisements online for a commission from certain companies.”
Senthil was booked under IPC Section 507 and under the Information Technology Act and has been remanded in judicial custody.
