CHENNAI: A case of honour killing has surfaced in Thanjavur district, but with a difference. Honour killings are generally done by parents or brothers of the victims, but this one was executed by the spouse. A Caste Hindu P Pasupathy (30) of Kamachipuram fell in love and married a Dalit girl Ilayarani (28), but allegedly killed her just a fortnight later to “uphold the caste honour” at Ayyanallur village.“Pasupathy, a Thevar, was ostracised by his family because he married Ilayarani,” said Senthil Kumar, Inspector, Thirupananthal Police Station. “Upset over his decision, his parents refused to part with his share of property. This outraged Pasupathy who murdered Ilayarani with a sickle blaming her for causing disrespect to his family,” said the inspector, who nabbed Pasupathy on September 16, a day after the alleged murder.
