New Delhi: In a suspected case of a jilted lover taking vengeance, a man shot at a woman, injuring her grievously, and then shot himself in the head Sunday afternoon, Delhi Police said.

Sanjay Aggarwal, 26, went to his 22-year-old friend Uma Rani Sharma’s rented accommodation in New Rajender Nagar with flowers in the morning. Uma, staying in the capital for a year, was not home as she was to appear in an exam for a Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited job.

The police said Sharma, on return, found Aggarwal at her home. The two had a heated argument, at the end of which he pulled out a gun.

“It was around 1 p.m. and like any of his other visits, Aggarwal came to my house where Sharma is staying as paying guest. He was carrying a bouquet of flowers,” landlord Sukhbir Singh told the police in a written statement.

“They were in the room when all of a sudden we heard sounds of three gunshots. We rushed there and found them both lying in a pool of blood. Aggarwal was holding the gun in his hand and it was pointed towards his temple,” he said.

According to the police, Aggarwal could have first fired two shots. One hit Uma in her neck while the other was lodged in her chest. He then committed suicide by pumping one bullet into his temple.

Aggarwal died immediately on the spot after the bullet he fired went straight through his neck and head. Sharma was rushed to the Ganga Ram Hospital, where doctors described her condition as critical.

The police said Aggarwal was from Aligarh and Uma is from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh.

“They both were classmates and close friends from the time they studied at the GLA Institute of Engineering and Management of Mathura. They both had pursued the Bachelor in Electronics course from the same institute before coming to the capital,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (central Delhi) Jaspal Singh.

In Delhi, Sharma was working for Amarson Private Limited in an area near her rented home.

The police said some of her friends, including Aggarwal, often visited her. “Our inquiry says that girl had never had any fight with any of the friends who visited her home.”

Police sources said it is possible that Sharma had only been friends with Aggarwal.

“Aggarwal had come there with a bouquet of flowers. He might have proposed her for marriage. It is also possible that she could have turned down his proposal and in a fit of anger he opened fire at her,” a police source said.

“It seems that the boy had come prepared. We are also investigating whether he had made similar proposal to her earlier and was troubling her. We would now question their common friends to get to the bottom of the case,” the source added.

The police have informed the families of both and called them to Delhi for their cooperation in the case.

Jaspal Singh said nothing could be said before the completion of the investigations.

“We are trying to establish the source of the countrymade pistol used in the shootout,” he added.
