TIRUVANNAMALAI: In a bid to get a government job and ensure a sustainable livelihood for the rest of his life, a 28-year-old youth, with his friend’s help, murdered his father, who was employed with the forest department. Elumalai (58), who was working as a forest guard at Paruvathamalai in Polur Range, was murdered by his son, just four months short of his retirement. The arrest of the victim’s son Murugan and his friend Vaigunthavasan (30) of Kezhilkuppam on Friday has sent shock waves among the villagers, since the murder was planned and executed for monitory benefits. Elumalai was found dead on the morning of April 24 at his sugar cane farm.Kadaladi police registered a case of unnatural death and during the preliminary inquiry, found that it was a murder. Even as the investigators suspected Murugan because of his ‘emotionless’ attitude upon seeing his father’s dead body, the postmortem report gave solid evidence to prove his involvement in the crime. “The postmortem report revealed that the food Elumalai ate at about 7.30 pm before going to the farmland on April 23 was not digested. Normally, it takes three hours for digestion. Based on this, we fixed the time of murder between 8 and 9 pm. The suspicion on Murugan grew stronger as he was the last person to see Elumalai alive,” said R V Ramya Bharathi, Superintendent of Police, Tiruvannamalai.
