New Delhi: Barcelona may not have had the perfect season after they were dumped out of the Champions League, but they are still leading the pack in the tough Spanish Primera Liga - and one of the reasons for their success is the young Lionel Messi - super-fast, outrageously skilled, and with a temperament beyond his age - Messi is integral to the exciting brand of football played by Barcelona.
In his debut season, 20-year-old Lionel Messi helped propel Barcelona to the Spanish League title as well as European Cup glory. This time out, Barcelona are in the final four of the Copa del Rey and top the Spanish League standings by two points ahead of bitter rivals Real Madrid.
"The league is going great. There are five matches left and we are first in the standings. Victory is in our own hands. We know that the five matches ahead of us will be very tough, but we are prepared for it," Messi says.
Barcelona failed to defend their Champions League title this season. The side got eliminated in the first knockout round by eventual finalists Liverpool. But Messi insists their season has not been tarnished by that failure.
"This has been a very good year for us. I know is not easy to win the league again, and also win the Copa del Rey. But I believe that winning two important titles represents a very good year," the prodigy adds.
His abilities were highlighted by his recent goal against Getafe, where he beat six men to score what is being hailed as the Goal of the Year. It was almost an exact copy of Maradona's goal from the 1986 World Cup, and has led to Messi being labeled "Messidona".
"I wasn't thinking of scoring a goal like that. I don't usually think of a certain strategy ahead of the moment. The goal came like that, and if I hadn't achieved it nothing would have changed for me," Messi says.
Here's wishing the young Messi success with both club and country for years to come. Hopefully without the help of the Hand of God.
