Mob torches billing station in Mumbai over tariff hike
Shiv Sena has asked consumers not to pay "inflated" electricity bills.

Mumbai: A mob protesting electricity tariff hike burnt down a Best billing station in Mumbai's Worli at around 0400 hrs IST Thursday morning.

The mob was reportedly led by suspected Shiv Sena workers.

The protest against the hike in electricity charges by Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Energy Ltd had tuned violent on Wednesday and police had resorted to lathi charge to disperse a group of Shiv Sena workers who disrupted traffic on the Western Express Highway.

A truck parked outside Reliance Energy office in Kandivali was allegedly set on fire by Sena workers on Wednesday during the protest against tariff hike.

Sena mouthpiece Saamana also appealed to the consumers not to pay what it called "inflated" electricity bills.

"Reliance Energy, BEST, TATA and Mahavitaran are looting people with exorbitant electricity rates and Sena is protesting against these companies," the paper said adding Maharashtra Government should intervene into the matter and stay the hike.

Police detained a few prominent Shiv Sena leaders as a precautionary measure.

Last week, party workers had stormed the Reliance Energy office at Santa Cruz accusing it overcharging its customers. There was also a ruckus in the Maharashtra Assembly over the attack during Question Hour.
