Tora Khasgir has moved the courts in Mumbai stating that she and her husband are being harassed by Indian officials.

New Delhi: Asian Model of the Year in 2002, Tora Khasgir, has in a unique case moved the courts in Mumbai stating that she and her husband are being harassed by Indian officials.

Tora met Iranian-born Australian national and cinematographer Reza Borhani in 2002 and married him two years later.

Although she is entitled to get the status of a Person of Indian Origin (PIO), bureaucrats at the foreign national registration office in Mumbai have denied her the right.

Tora reported that the officials said they were going to harass her for marrying an Australian and not an Indian.

To begin with, officials black-listed her husband for a minor visa violation for which he paid a fine, and then they sent him back twice.

While the High Commission of India in Australia cleared Reza, Tora complained that they were victims of bureaucracy and racial bias. I want to live in my country and I want my husband to live with me, she says.

Tora and her husband, who is in India on a three-month Mumbai-only visa, have moved the Bombay high court against the Foreign Regional Registration Officer (FRRO), Crawford Market and the Union ministry of home affairs for harassment by the immigration department over grant of the PIO status.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice said the matter was sensitive and that no orders could be passed without getting a reply from the home department and perusing the files.
