New Delhi: After portraying the helplessness of Kunjikkuttan, the Kathakali performer in 'Vanaprastham', who has left an indelible imprint on viewer's mind and soul, Mohanlal will once again play the lead in a Shaji N Karun movie. The director, who is a purveyor of well-crafted and internationally acclaimed fares, this time goes for T Padmanabhan's story 'Kadal'.
"The scripting is almost completed. We are planning to start the movie by this year end," says Shaji N Karun.Kadal is considered one of the most touching story written in Malayalam. And what are the elements of allure that prompt the master filmmaker to opt 'Kadal'?
"Music, sea and poetry are the recurrent themes of the story which revolves around three characters, a father, mother and daughter. There are some feelings in life that are perennial. Such emotions mainly rely upon time to attain meaningfulness. That is one factor that prompted me to opt this story," Shaji adds.
In 'Kadal', the narrative is unveiled through the mother's diary which the daughter keeps as a memoir. The complex nuances of the character of the mother, the level of misunderstanding between mother and father and an omnipresent involvement of the mother's music teacher are the major undercurrents of the story. While reading the diary, the daughter gets an initial impression that 'all is not well' between her parents.
"But when she further turns the pages, she comes across lines in which mother shares her compassion for her husband who allowed her to pursue her passion for music and about her music teacher with whom she has a peculiar relation. Finally, after the death of the mother, as they return home, the father says, 'I was never able to understand her. I can never understand her world.' Meanwhile, the daughter is thinking of her mother who always dreamt of sea but was never able to see the sea, and about her missed childhood. It is a story just about people, emotions and also that of time," Shaji says.
The narrative of the original story is different and the names of the characters are not mentioned anywhere in it. The central character of the story is a woman. The cast other than the male lead is yet to be finalised. "We are giving final touches to the script. Each character will have its own depth," the director says. He adds that the final discussions are going on and the whether the movie will be an Indo-French collaboration is yet to be finalised.
