Mumbai: The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Malvani area of Mumbai reached 64 on Friday. Thirty others who consumed the spurious liquor are in a critical condition and are on ventilation support.
Following the incident, 8 policemen have been suspended for negligence and connivance, even as three people have been arrested in connection with the case.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a probe into the hooch tragedy and the police has been asked to submit a report as soon as possible. The case has been transferred to the Mumbai crime branch.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria on Friday evening suspended eight police officers at Malvani police station, including senior inspector Prakash Patil in connection with the incident. Of the three persons arrested by the police, one allegedly distributed the alcohol while the others were suppliers.
On Wednesday, the victims consumed liquor at a shop in Malvani and fell sick the next morning. It was evident by Thursday evening that they had consumed contaminated liquor.
