There appears to be a link between the murders of rationalists Govind Pansare and MM Kalburgi. According to sources, the Karnataka CID team probing the Kalburgi murder case visited Sangli in Maharashtra to get details on Pansare case.

The team of the Karnataka CID is also expected to question Pansare murder suspect Gaikwad, who was on Wednesday sent to police custody till September 22.

Meanwhile, two more people were detained in connection with Pansare killing.

Pansare was gunned down outside his home in Kolhapur on February 16. Kalburgi was killed under similar circumstances at his residence in August.

Earlier, Bombay High Court had asked Maharashtra government respond on a petition seeking a probe by the special investigation team (SIT) into Pansare's killing.

Pansare, a prominent anti-toll protester, was shot at along with his wife in Kolhapur on February 16 while they were taking a morning walk. After undergoing surgery at a hospital in Kolhapur immediately after the shooting, Pansare was flown to Mumbai in an air ambulance arranged by the Maharashtra government.

He was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital where he succumbed during treatment.

On Tuesday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced Rs five lakh to those who could provide clues about the murder of noted Kannada progressive writer and scholar MM Kalburgi.

The government decided to give the reward to whoever gives information about Kalburgi's murder. The identities of the informants would be kept secret, he told reporters after meeting the families of Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare, the rationalists who were killed in Maharashtra, and Kalburgi, who was shot dead at Dharward in Karnataka on August 30.
