CHENNAI:  The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs 765 crore Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) for Tamil Nadu to execute infrastructure projects in rural areas.The assistance will cover drinking water, irrigation and rural connectivity, NABARD sources said.The assistance also includes an amount of Rs 226 crore sanctioned for the first time, exclusively for creating warehousing infrastructure by establishing 1,281 god owns with a total storage capacity of 4.34 lakh metric tonnes, sources from NABARD said.These godowns will be established at select regulated markets, primary agricultural co-operative societies (PACS), agricultural produce co-operative marketing Societies (APCMS) and taluk headquarters of civil supplies corporation all over the State.An amount of Rs 157 crore has also been sanctioned for a project to provide drinking water supply to four unions in Madurai district covering 753 rural habitations. This proposal is part of the Melur Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme being implemented by the State Government. On completion, the project will provide potable water to 6.26 lakh rural population.A sum of Rs 64 crore has been sanctioned for revamp nine old anaicuts in the Amaravathy river in Karur District, rehabilitating Vriddhachalam anaicut across Manimuktha river in Cuddalore District, constructing check dam across river Cauvery near Kambarasampettai in Tiruchy District and modernising Melmangalam supply channel in Theni district.  On completion, these projects will benefit an ayacut area of 14,575 hectares.An amount of Rs 318 crore has also been sanctioned for reconstruction of 68 rural bridges in 18 districts, widening and strengthening of 442 rural roads in 228 town panchayats and 330 village roads in 30 districts of Tamil Nadu.  On completion, these projects will benefit 2,262 villages comprising 38.08 lakh rural population.
