MAHBUBNAGAR: A bit of drama at the residence of Nagam Janardhan Reddy livened up the atmosphere on the eve of polling in seven crucial byelections in the state— six in Telangana and one in coastal Andhra.Three policemen in mufti barged into the house of the former minister and independent candidate in Nagarkurnool, apparently to conduct a search. Janardhan Reddy’s followers obstructed them and things turned ugly as one of the men was detained. The other two fled to their offices and informed their superiors, fearing for their colleague’s safety.Senior police officials threatened to register a complaint against Janardhan Reddy and his followers, while the latter went to the election returning officer and lodged a complaint of trespass.Nagarkurnool DSP Ashok Kumar rushed to Janardhan Reddy’s house and the two had a heated exchange. The candidate alleged that this was an effort to mar his chances; the policemen had come to demand a bribe from him, but he had refused.DSP Ashok Kumar said constables had only gone to Janardhan Reddy’s house as part of their duty to keep surveillance on candidates. He said cases would be registered against Janardhan Reddy for detaining police officers on duty.Polling will take place from 8 am to 5 pm Sunday and counting will commence on March 21.
